Native Islander enjoyed bowling, horse racing

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Charles Harold Bruns, a native Staten Islander and Army veteran who liked bowling and horse racing, died Aug. 5 in the VA Medical Center in Lake City, Fla., of pancreatic cancer. He was 67.

When he was Rosebank resident, Mr. Bruns was a frequent roller at Madalone's Bowling Center in Tompkinsville.

Born and raised in Rosebank, Mr. Bruns graduated from McKee High School. He served two years in the Army before being honorably discharged.

Mr. Bruns then took a job as a traffic manager with American President Lines, a shipping company then based in lower Manhattan. He later moved to Florida, and continued to work in the shipping industry for another 15 years.

He retired, then moved to Cairo, Ga., in 2005.

Mr. Bruns is survived by daughter, Victoria Bruns; sons Keith and Paul; sisters Celeste Bruns and Bernadette Samaritano; brothers Robert, Thomas, Joseph, Donald and Harold; and dozens of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Roberta Beck and Jacqueline Malloy, and brothers John, William and Edward. A memorial mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rosebank. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
