Paul L. Hinds Sr., 91, of Raleigh, NC died January 13, 2012 from cancer.
He was born April 13, 1920 in Salem, Indiana to parents Charles Francis Hinds and Stella McKnight Hinds.
He married Stella Hildebrand on July 28, 1942 and they had four children: Paul L. Jr., Carolyn Sue, Timothy and a stillborn son. After 46 years of marriage, Stella predeceased Paul in September 1988. In 1990 he married Virginia Thompson and extended his family tent pegs by inclusively "adopting" Ginny's six children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Paul faithfully served his country through 20 years of active Army duty with the 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team. This Combat Team jumped on Fortress Corregidor on 16 February 1945 to liberate that Island from occupying Japanese forces. The 503rd was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its actions and Paul was awarded a Bronze Star. He retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3.
After retiring from the Army he then became a self-employed insurance agent. He was a 65-year member and a past president of the Raleigh Host Lions Club where he received some of the Lions Club's highest awards including the Melvin Jones Fellow for "dedicated humanitarian service", and the Jack Stickley Fellowship. He was also an avid gardener.
He is survived by Virginia Hinds, his wife of 21 years; sons and daughters-in-law Paul L. Hinds Jr. and Margie Inana, Timothy and Jeanne Hinds; his "bonus" sons and daughters Catherine Petersen, Susan Petersen, Mary Kirsten, Virginia Street, John Nagy, and Charles Nagy and their spouses; 29 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife, Stella Hildebrand Hinds (9/88), and his daughter, Carolyn Sue Lindsey (6/10), and his three siblings.
There will be a visitation Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery April 17, 2012.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Raleigh Host Lions Club.
