Born Ethel Louise SAWYER of Key West, FL, the only daughter among six children of Charles W. and Lula (Meres) SAWYER; the Sawyer's were descendants of 'Eleutheran Adventurers', Puritans who set sail from Bermuda to seek freedom, landing at 'Spanish Wells' on the Bahamian Island of Eleuthera (1640's). Chas. and Lula moved to Key West and built two original 'conch' houses (ca. 1898-1901) in the 300 block of 3rd St, across from 'Sawyer Lane'; they attended Methodist Church (f. 1830's) where Ethel played piano as a teen; Ethel and a class of 8 others graduated Monroe County High School on May 2, 1913 then she met and married a US Navy sailor, Tully Jones, from Denham Springs, LA in 1914; the American Legion Post at Key West was named for her brother, Arthur Sawyer, the first US Marine from Key West to die in WW-I in France; Tully and Ethel moved to California briefly, then settled in Tucson, Arizona where Tully was a railroad engineer, BLE union griever, and a member of the BPOE, the Masonic Lodge and Sabbar Shrine; they attended First Christian Church; Ethel was a member of Eastern Star & elected "Worthy High Priestess" of the White Shrine of Jerusalem (1947-48 Sahuaro #2); they had two daughters: Helen Louise (Jones) Rogers and Margaret Marvelle (Jones) Currier. All family members are interred at South Lawn Cemetary in Tucson.
