She was born Alice Hasseltine Cummings in 1868. She married John Freeman Dodson in 1885 in Burnet, Texas. Recalling her honeymoon, Alice said the 150 mile trip from Burnet to the new ranch home in Concho County was made in a "hack", and that three days were required to cover the distance. "We didn't travel so fast then, but we saw all the beauties of nature. I believe people appreciated what opportunities they had then, more than does the present generation".
She was very active in her church and with health and love and the true values of life: love of family, a quest for knowledge, a sense of duty, and much respect for themselvs and others. Three daughters were school teachers, a son was a medical doctor, one son was an oil tycoon.
Alice was a past matron and a charter member of the Eastern Star, Chapter #391, chartered December 4, 1907, in Paint Rock, Texas. Back then, everyone who was anyone was in the Masons and Eastern Star. She and John lived in Paint Rock, Texas until their death, she in 1944. Alice and her younger daughter were neighbors in Paint Rock, Texas, and a few years before her death, she lived with this daughter, who had lost her husband and was raising a family all alone Alice helped with meals and taking care of the grandchildren. She is remembered as being a seamstress and wonderful cook. She stitched many quilts for the family. Some were made when she was a young woman in the early 1900's, possibly she brought some from her hope chest as early as the 1880's.
