James F. Allan
James Frerichs Allan, 75 of Allison, was born on January 10, 1921 on a farm in Jefferson Township, Butler County, the son of Emmett and Flora (Frerichs) Allan. He died on Friday, December 6, 1996, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.
He received his education at the Allison Community Schools and the Shell Rock Schools. He transferred to Shell Rock High School in 1937 so that he could take courses in preparation to become a teacher at Iowa State Teacher's College, now UNI. He graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1939 and then attended Iowa State Teacher's College where he completed the curriculum necessary to become a teacher in 1940.
He taught in rural schools in Butler County until 1942, when he entered the Air Force during World War II. He served in the Air Force until 1946. James returned to Allison in 1946 and began work for his uncle J. Frerichs (Hiney) Allan at Allan Chevrolet and Oldsmobile in Allison. He was part owner for Allan for Allison Chevrolet from 1952 until 1969, when he sold the business. He then became a meat inspector for the Iowa Department of Agriculture from 1969 until his retirement in 1989.
James was untied in marriage with Rouen Alice Martin on December 28, 1941 in Clarksville.
James was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. He was also a member of Allison Am-vets and was a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge.
His interests were gardening as well as collecting antiques. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife, Rouen of Allison; a son, John H. Allan of Hampton; a daughter, Rebecca Maurer of LuVerne, MN; a brother, John W. Allan of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren: Jill (Maurer) Tait of Phoenix, AZ; Sara (Allan) Husank of Denver, CO; James Maurer of Iowa City; Geoff Maurer of Maryville, MO; Heather Allan of Vermilion, SD; Elizabeth Allan of Iowa City; James C. Allan of Hampton and one great grandson, Matthew Tait of Phoenix, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 9, 1996 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Pastor Jerry Laehn officiating. Mrs. Arleen Radcliffe was the organist, Dean Uhlenhopp and Shirley Wubbena sang a duet for the songs "Lord, Here I am," "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art." Granddaughter, Jamee Maurer delivered the eulogy at the service. Pallbearers were James Echoff, Gary Wangsness, Charles Hardy, Neal Wedeking, Walt Kent and Warrren Henrichs. Honorary pallbearers were William Wix, Sr., Lawrence Koester, Marshall Mosher, Jack Cooper and Dallas Kluiter, Interment was at Allison Cemetery.
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison was in charge of the arrangements.
