He and his cousin William Allen appear there in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census. (William was a son of the Darius' mother Joanna's brother Darius Allen--later known as Brig.-Gen. Darius Allen.)

The 1880 U.S. Federal Census shows Darius and his wife Maggie and their children residing in Troy. By this time Darius has been well established as a carpenter.
