[This memorial is created with the permission and endorsement of Daniel Bayless, Sr.'s direct descendant, family historian Bill Gawne.]

According to various records Daniel Bayless, Sr. was born about 1805 in Sodus Point or in Sodus, Ontario County, New York, USA.
Wayne County, originally included in lands of Ontario and Seneca Counties, became a separate county on April 11, 1823.
Therefore, he was born in Ontario County, just as resources of the time indicate.

As to Daniel's town of birth being Sodus or Sodus Point, records vary. However, the first documented settlement in the town of Sodus was in 1794 at Sodus Point. Capt. Charles Williamson, agent for the Pultney Estates,, arrived in Sodus Point with a group of laborers, surveyors and builders to create a settlement. Several houses, a tavern, a gristmill and a sawmill were built.
The first settler in what is now the village of Sodus was John Holcomb, who built a home there in 1809. The present village of Sodus was first used as a location for a town meeting in 1815.
My (Cherie J.) thinking is that Daniel was likely born in Sodus Point.

Indeed, according to his daughter Elizabeth's death certificate, Daniel Bayless, Sr. was born in Sodus Point when it was part of Ontario County.

As of this date I (Cherie J.) haven't yet confirmed the identity of Daniel's parents or siblings.

About 1833 Daniel Bayless, Sr. married Elizabeth Burgess.

Their children include: Daniel Bayless, Jr. (1834 – 1900); Mary Bayless (b. 1837); John B. Bayless (1842 – 1906); Sarah J. Bayless (1843 – ); and Elizabeth A. Bayless (1846 – 1918).

Daniel's surname Bayless has also been spelled in a variety of ways, such as Bayles, Baylefs, Baylis, and Bayliss.

The 1850 US Federal Census spells the surname as Boyles, per the following:

Daniel's Cause of Death: Heart Disease

Records were destroyed in a fire during the years Daniel and Elizabeth died. It is believed that they were buried in the "old Sodus Rural Cemetery." Many graves from one local cemetery slid into the waters as the bluff eroded.

[Some references to Troupville appear in the following documents. Troupville was a Lake Ontario community in today's Wayne County. By 1824 the name used for the former Troupville area was Sodus or Sodus Point. However, some documents after 1824 still used Troupville which was not then the legal name.]
