SIOUX CITY - Florence V. Anderson, 102, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. until service Thursday at the funeral home.
Florence was born Sept. 30, 1906, in rural Plymouth County, Iowa, to Charles C. and Minnie (Hansen) Croston. She grew up in Plymouth County and attended rural country school. She later transferred to Hinton (Iowa) High School, where she played basketball, graduating in 1924. She completed her education by attending Morningside College and obtained her teaching certificate.
She married Harold B. Anderson on Sept. 21, 1935, in Sioux City. He passed away on Jan. 17, 1983. She resided most of her life in the Siouxland area. This allowed her to teach in the Hinton and Bronson, Iowa, School District. With her husband, they owned and operated Anderson's Resort on Straight Lake in Osage, Minn., from 1947 to 1952.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling all 48 continental states, fishing, sewing, knitting, tending flowers, gardening and bird watching. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, her thoughtfulness and always caring about her family.
Survivors include her nephews, Don and Judy Croston of Bellevue, Neb., and Craig and Mary Croston of Sioux City; grandnieces and grandnephews, Kelly and Tammy Christman of Dakota City, Sheri and Dale Holcomb of Moorcroft, Wyo., Pamela and Pat Schoenfelder of Worthington, Minn., Carla Jo and Mike Morgan of South Sioux City, Lori and Dave Olsen of South Sioux City, Craig P. and Maria Croston of Phoenix, Ariz., Scott and Teresa Croston of Ridgefield, Wash., Beth and Ron Hansen of Bellevue, Neb., Steve Croston of Shawnee, Kan., Melayne Croston of Shawnee, Dave Croston of Sioux City, Kim Croston of Sioux City and Jeff and Liz Croston of Sioux City; numerous great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; other family members; and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her brothers, Louis and Orval Croston; and two nieces, Dorothy Madsen and Donna Outhouse.
