Samuel Beall was born about 1807 in MD. He attended Union College in NY and studied law.

He married Elizabeth Cooper and they had seven children. Around 1835, he moved his family to WI. In 1850-52, he became the second Lieutenant Governer of WI.

During the Civil War, he served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 18th WI Infantry and was wounded at Shiloh.

After the war, he travelled to MT. He became embroiled in an argument with the editor of the local newspaper in Helena and was shot and killed during an argument.
