John Beard was the son of Sam Beard and Rosetta Mowers Beard. His mother remarried when John was young and the family moved to Sioux City IA.
On 4 Jun 1908, he married Lulu Craswell in Sioux City. He and his wife had three sons, John, Robert, and Paul. After attending Theological seminary, he served as chaplain in WW1 with the 91st Division.
He later served as pastor in churches in IA, NE, WA and in Portland OR. He was pastor of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian in Portland for 25 years.
He loved outdoor adventures and history. He canoed 1200 miles from MT to Bismarck, ND with his son. He and his wife rode horseback along the Oregon Trail from Oregon City to Independence, Missouri. He wrote a book of their adventure, 'Saddles East'.
