| Birth: | Feb. 2, 1729 Chester County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | 1799 Alamance County North Carolina, USA | Hannah was born in Chester County, PA, where her family belonged to the Society of Friends (Quakers). In the 1740s her family moved to a new Quaker settlement in Frederick County, VA, now Berkeley Co, WV. There they belonged to the Hopewell Friends meeting. She was married there to William Brown on on Feb 4, 1748. Her sister Margaret married William's brother Thomas four months later.
The Quakers kept careful records, but the minute book for the years 1734-1759 were lost when a fire destroyed the home where they were kept. But among the few records surviving is this one, reprinted in the book "Hopewell Friends History" p. 50: "At our Monthly Meeting of Hopewell at Opeckan the fourth Day of the second month A. D. 1748. ... The ffriends appointed to see Wm. Brown & Hannah Moons Marriage Accomplished report that it was decently Consumated."
Sometime around 1750 Hannah, her sister, Margaret, and their husbands moved to "Orange County," NC, near what is now Snow Camp, Alamance County. They were founding members of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, which formed in 1751. At that location they were blessed with thirteen children, all of whom grew up and married. Hannah is thought to have died in 1799, but in any case sometime between November, 1797, when her husband William wrote his last will, and February, 1800, when he died. Her grave at Cane Creek Cemetery is no doubt marked with a simple field stone, as was often the custom then among Quakers.
