TAZEWELL, Va. James Barker, 86, of Tazewell, formerly of Bluewell, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000 in Abingdon, Va. following a brief illness. Born Nov. 7, 1914 in Morgan County, Ky, he was a son of the late James and Lou Cox Barker, both Kentucky natives. He was a lifelong resident of Mercer County. He was a retired coal miner with U.S. Steel in Gary. He had been a miner for over 40 years. The last 28 was at Gary 14, where he retired in 1977. He was a member of U.M.W.A. Local Union #6025. Jimmy's love for country music was shown in his younger days. In the late 1930's and early 1940's, he was a regular performer with Molly O'Day on WillS Radio Station in Bluefield and WJLS Radio in Beckley. In the early 1940's while living in Montgomery, Ala., he also sung with Hank Williams, Sr. on a Montgomery radio station. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was a member of Brushfork Baptist Church. He was the last member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 6l years, Helen Anderson Barker; four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include his daughter, Jeanene L. Harris and husband, Gene of the Thompson Valley section of Tazewell; grandson, Jody Harris and wife, Detra of Thompson Valley;
great granddaughter, Heather Harris; great grandson, Heath Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
A committal service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Bluefield, Va. with the Revs. Rodney Lawson and Jared Wood officiating.
Jackie Barker, Jerry Barker, Jimmy Barker and Johnny Barker will serve as honorary pallbearers.
