GABRIAL "GAIL" RAYMOND ARMSTRONG was born on 14 Jan 1917 in WRIGHT TWP., POTT. CO., IA. He died on 11 Nov 2003 at the age of 86 in ATLANTIC, CASS CO., IA. 86 years, 9 months and 28 days. He was buried on 14 Nov 2003 in WHIPPLE CEM., POTT. CO, IA. Gail Armstrong, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 11, 2003 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center where he was a resident since December 2001.
Gail was born on a farm west of Lewis, on Jan. 14, 1917 the son of Clarence Edward and Margaret Hester (McCarty) Armstrong. He attended country schools and graduated from Lewis High School in 1934. In high school he played baseball, football, and basketball. His favorite sports were horseshoe pitching and bowling.
Gail was always involved with farming. He helped his father on the farm and helped operate a corn sheller. Following his marriage in Red Oak, to Glendale Grennell on Jan. 29, 1941, they farmed until 1989 when they moved to Atlantic. Gail wanted to sell his farm to someone who would love it as he did, farm it and not let it be torn down or left vacant. In 1993 he happily sold his farm to the Wallace Foundation for research and it is now known as the Armstrong Research Farm, west of Lewis.
Gail was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold, and a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Throughout his life he was active in various township committees and served as a Wright Township Trustee, was 4-H leader and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Glendale of Atlantic; his sons, Robert Armstrong and his wife Mary of Atlantic, and John Armstrong and his wife Christine of Omaha, Neb.; his daughters, Lois Welliver and her husband Don of Riverside, Mo., and Alice Frechette and her husband Steve of St. Cloud, Minn.; his seven grandchildren, his great-granddaughter, his brother, Lyle Armstrong and his wife Letha of Atlantic and his sister, Mildred Buboltz and her husband Joe of Lewis. Also several nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends survive him.
Preceding Gail in death were his parents, and one sister, Louise Armstrong.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Nov. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold. Burial will be in the Whipple Cemetery.
