| Birth: | Sep. 4, 1866 | | Death: | Jul. 7, 1955 |  Gouverneur Tribune Press - Thursday July 21, 1955 Funeral services for George Doran Burnett, 88, well known retired farm owner in this area were held Monday July 10, at the Burr Funeral Home at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Richard K. Janck, rector of Trinity Episcopal church officiating. Burial was made in the East DeKalb cemetery.
Mr. Burnett died at the Edward John Noble hospital July 7, following a short illness. He had been in the hospital about two weeks.
Born September 4, 1866, on the old Driesler battlefield near Morristown, Ontario, the son of Edward and Caroline Doran Burnett, he came to East DeKalb with his partens when he was one year old to live on the old Burnett homestead farm. His grandfather, who had come to the North Country from Connecticut, was one of 54 men to clear and settle the area there. It was his grandfather who also laid out the roads in that section.
At the age of 12 he moved with his parents to a farm at DeKalb Junction. Following his graduation from the Hermon High School he operated the Burnett farm at East DeKalb.
He was married when he was 21 to Miss Ella LaSalle at East DeKalb. The couple had two children, Hazel Martha and James Edwin. James died in May 30, 1953.
About 1890, he moved to DeKalb Junction and at that time traveled for the McCormick farm machinery company and entered the profession of breeding and training race and draft horses.
Ten years later he moved to Gouverneur and established stables at 167 Rowley street. Famous among his horses were Crown Prince, Judge Red, Oscelot and Young ah There.
He had lived alone at the Rowley street residence since his wife died in 1931.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Hael Burnett Hudson, Gouverneur, two grandchildren, Mrs. T Heffner, Boston and James H. Burnett, Cranberry Lake and three great grandchildren,Jacklyn, Royce and Susie Heffner of Boston.
