Chris Amelung was born 26 Sep 1832 in Klein Rhüden (now combined with Seesen), Niedersachsen, Germany to Heinrich "Christian" Amelunke and Johanne Marie Friederike Klusmann. The family immigrated to Gordonville, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri during 1846 - 1847 where Chris immediately began an apprenticeship at Iron Mountain, Missouri for Mechanics - he would eventually work as a mechanic for the furnace at Pilot Knob, Missouri where there was a large iron ore mine. On 05 Jan 1854, Chris married Johanna Marie Magdalene Bodenstein, the daughter of Johann "Heinrich" Christian Bodenstein and Johanna Marie "Dorothee" Achtermann. Together they had 11 children but only 6 lived to adulthood. Chris died on 06 Aug 1903 in Pilot Knob, Iron County, Missouri from paralysis. Family stories indicate he had a rare and fatal skin cancer called Melanoma.
