Eagle scout, U.S. Naval Academy graduate (1929), naval aviator, WWII veteran, teacher, gentleman farmer. Son of Edward Robert Davison and Jennie Risley Davison, husband of Adele Monges Davison, father of John Walter jr. (Jack), Sally Lynn (Jill), Dorothy Adele (Dori), Richard Risley, and Henry Gordon. During WWII, he was instrumental in the development of aerborne radar and remotely guided airplanes, and subsequently commanded a squadron of drone F6F "Hellcats" in the atom bomb tests on Bikini Atoll. Capt. Davison was Commanding Officer of the USS Absecon (AVP-23) and USS Point Cruz (CVE-119), and served as Director of Shore Establishments in the Bureau of Aeronautics.
Following his retirement in 1959, Capt. Davison settled in Waterford, Virginia, and made a second career teaching mathematics at Loudoun Valley High School in nearby Purcellville. After the death of his beloved wife Adele in 1973, he married Catherine McVay Tribbett, childhood friend of Adele's and widow of longtime friend Gil Tribbet, in 1974. While courting Cay, he once wrote on the underside of her toilet seat, "It's so nice to have a man about the house."
Capt. Davison was well known for his keen, analytical intellect as well as his quiet sense of humor, and enjoyed sharing with his children and grandchildren his passion over the puzzle of Amelia Earhart's disappearance. Two of his favorite sayings were "The picture works the problem," and "The payoff is on the results."
