Sir Ralph Bigod, son of Hugh le Bigod, the 3rd Earl of Norfolk, and Maud Marshall was born about 1215 in Framlingham Castle, Suffolk, England.

Sometime after 1238, Sir Ralph Bigod married Bertha Furnival nee Ferrers, daughter of Sir William de Ferrers, the 4th Earl of Derby, and Agnes de Meschines and widow of Thomas Furnival. Sir Ralph and Bertha had son Sir John Bigod in Stockton, Norfolk, England by 1245.
