Freda Pauline Stark Smith

Freda (Pauline) Stark Smith was born July 3, 1921, in Winona, MO, the daughter of Charles Albert Stark and Martha Elizabeth (Hart) Stark. She passed away on May 25, 2013, at Birch Tree Place in Birch Tree, MO, at the age of 91 years.

She was united in marriage to Sam Wiley Smith, Jr., on May 16, 1941, in Van Buren, MO, and to this union two children were born. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Martha Stark; husband Sam Wiley Smith, Jr.; one brother, Orbie Ferguson; and four sisters, Daisy Mooney, Elva Myers, Jean Weaver, and Ethel McDonald.

She is survived by one son Stanley Keith Smith and wife Lynda of Harrisburg, PA; one daughter Brenda Smith Forck and husband Stephen of St. Louis, MO; one sister Ellen Link of Winona, MO; four grandchildren Elizabeth Michele (James) Heizer, Stanley Keith (Mirna) Smith, Jr., Elizabeth Smith (Ryan) Doherty and Laura Kathryn Bates; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Heizer, Benjamin Heizer, Luka Smith and Maya Smith; and a host of other family and friends.

She was an active member of her church until her health declined. She was baptized on Palm Sunday in 1961 at the Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego, California. Through the years she was an active member of the First Baptist Churches in Winona, Salem and Mountain View, Missouri. Her faith was a vital part of her life and gave her hope, strength and encouragement, especially in her later years.

"Nanny", as she was affectionately called by her family, was happiest when surrounded by those she loved. She loved to paint her nails and work a crossword puzzle, often impressing her grandchildren with her knowledge of pop culture. She was a great role model and devoted to prayer, always thanking the Lord and praying before all meals. In her earlier years, she loved to sew, and would often make paper dolls for her grandkids. She also had a passion for jewelry; the more rings she could get on her fingers the better. She was full of love, gracious, and had an infectious giggle. She also still loved singing to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family deeply appreciates the special care Pauline received especially during her last few months from their cousins, Dixie Gardner and Sharon Thomas.

Pauline will be deeply missed by all those who have been blessed to know her, and her memories will remain in our hearts forever.
