Frances E. Augustyn, 97, formerly of 120 S. Lee Ave., died the morning of Aug. 15, 2010, in Golden Hill Nursing Home.
Frances E. Augustyn was born in New Castle on Oct. 15, 1912, the first of six children of Jacob and Aneila Borkowski Wilk.
A graduate of Madonna of Czestochowa Parochial School, she entered the work force at age 13, first as a housekeeper, then, over a half-centuary span, as an employee of the former Shenango China, primarily in its lining area. Her expertise was such that she was recalled there as a consultant and trainer at age 74.
She was the wife of Joseph P. Augustyn, who preceded her in death in 1991.
A devoted daughter of the Catholic Church, she was a lifelong member of Madonna of Czestochowa Church, which has since merged with St. Mary Church to become Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. She served as president of the parish Rosary Society, as a member of the Ladies Guild and in various other capacities. In her later years, she was a devotee of Mother Angelica's EWTN television network.
Her hobbies included sewing and baking and, with her lifelong female friends and relatives, she formed a monthly card-playing group in her younger days.
She belonged to the Casimir Pulaski Club and participated in its ladies auxiliary activities.
She enjoyed being active in many areas, loved to work, and lived independently until shortly before her death,
The most important part of her life, in addition to her faith, was her family.
Frances was the mother of Joseph P. Augustyn Jr. of Claremont, Calif., and Noel J. Augustyn of Chevy Chase, Md. In addition to her sons, survivors include her daughters-in-law, Gretchen and Ann; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by a sister, Mary E. Sniezek of New Castle; and a brother, Stanley Wilk of Twinsburg, Ohio.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceeed in death by two brothers, John amd Joseph Wilk; and a sister, Genevieve Homich Cifarri.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 to 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. Friday for St. Mary Church of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Victor Molka will officiate.
Burial will be in Madonna Cemetery alongside her husband.
