Seba was convicted of two counts of counterfeiting Spanish milled dollars by the Vermont State Supreme Court on February 8, 1795 at a session held in Woodstock (Windsor County), Vermont. The crime had occurred in Strafford VT on May 7, 1794 where he paid two men each a counterfeit Spanish dollar coin. He was also charged with counterfeiting 100 of the coins in base metal. Found guilty, Seba's harsh sentence was carried out on February 28, 1795. As punishment, his right ear was cut off, and his forehead was branded with the letter "C" with a branding iron. He failed to pay the fine of five pounds, and was placed in the Newbury Jail in Orange County VT on March 1, 1795. Source: "The Vermont Spirit" by Walter E. Perkins, 1916, pp. 49, 50.
