BACHMAN, Edward J. Edward J. Bachman, 95, formerly of Fairfield, husband of the late Josephine Redfield Bachman passed away peacefully on (March 17, 2011) in West Hartford, CT. He was born in Bridgeport, CT to the late Drs. Gejzy and Elizabeth Byrne Bachman, podiatrists in Bridgeport. He graduated from Central High School, Bridgeport and the MacAllister School of Embalming in New York City . He practiced as a licensed Funeral Director in Bridgeport for 45 years before retiring in 1980. Mr. Bachman was a resident of Fairfield for 59 years before moving to the Hartford area to be closer to his family. Mr. Bachman served as a Navy Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a Charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9427 and a member of American Legion Post 74, both in Fairfield. He was an avid, year-round salt and freshwater fisherman. He particularly enjoyed fishing for bluefish out of Southport Harbor, starting in the 1920's as a young boy with his Dad. Mr. Bachman kept a boat at the Ye Yacht Yard in Southport Harbor for 40 years and was a fixture there for over 50 years. He was a member of the Fairfield Boat Owners Association and was appointed to several Southport Harbor Commissions. In his retirement years, Mr. Bachman and his wife, Josephine, became avid metal detectors. They enjoyed walking the beautiful beaches of Fairfield and Westport searching for coins and little 'treasures' for their grandchildren. Mr. Bachman also enjoyed playing a friendly game of poker with his extended family on holidays and with his VFW and American Legion buddies. A communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield, Mr. Bachman was also a member of the Fairfield Historical Society and the Mill Plain Improvement Society, founded by his mother-in-law, the late Margaret Beers Redfield. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Josephine Redfield Bachman, and three brothers, William, Arthur, and George Bachman. He is survived by his beloved daughters and sons-in-law: Eleanor Angliss and husband, Robert, of Longmont, CO, Elizabeth Stockmal and husband, Henry, of Columbia, CT, Jane Bachman and husband, Robert Brzozowski, of Oneonta, NY and by his beloved son and daughter-in-law, James Bachman and wife, Karen, of West Hartford, CT; eight grandchildren: Robyn Angliss and companion, Robert Ballinger, Brian Angliss and wife, Jennifer, Gregory Stockmal and wife, Deb Caponera, Edward (Ted) Stockmal and companion, Karen Kaback, Carolyn and Andrew Bachman, Nathan and Elena Brzozowski; and two great-grandchildren, Bridget and Liam Angliss. He also leaves beloved nieces and nephews and their spouses: Susan and James Kennedy of Springfield, VA and Eleanor and Arthur Yeadon of Heyworth, IL, Walter and Margaret Redfield of Myrtle Beach, SC, David and Eileen Redfield of South Yarmouth, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road, Fairfield on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours for family and friends will be held Monday from 4-7 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield, CT.
