CHARLES G. ANDRIST, 71, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in Northeastern Washington and later in Colville Valley passed away at his home in Chewelah on July 29th, 1986.
Charles George Andrist was born in 1914 at Crookston, Minnesota, 2 years before his father moved the family to Great Falls, Montana and Hillyard, Washington where he worked for the Great Northern Railroad. Charles was one of 5 children born in Charles and Mary Alice Andrist. He grew up in the Hillyard area and graduated from Hillyard High School in 1932.
After graduation he spent eight years working as a meat cutter. While working in Pullman he was encouraged to apply to the College of Veterinary Medicine and started his education there in 1934. As part of his military service he participated in an accelerated program, graduating in 1944. While attending school he worked full-time and graduated at the head of his class. He was a member of the PHI BETA PHI and KAPPA PSI.
After graduation he worked for Armour Pharmaceudical Division of Armour and Company in Kansas City, Missouri. He relocated to the Chewelah area with his wife Kathryn in 1944. He began his practice under Procurement and Assignment from the U.S. Army where he held the rank of Captain in the reserves. He remained in active practice until 1984, a period of 40 years. During that time he provided health care for both large and small animals, including domestic pets and farm livestock.
He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He was also active in Masons, Kiewanis, the American Legion, Jobs Daughters Council, the American Bowling Congress, 4-H Leaders Council, WSU Alumni and the Chewalah Peak Ski Club.
Dr. Andrist is survived by his wife, Kathryn L. Andrist who resides at their Chewalah home. He is also survived by his son, Alan D. Andrist of Seattle, his daughter, Alice K. Miller, Chewelah, Margaret S. Andrist of Seattle and Mary A. Andrist of Newport and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
A memorial service was held on August 2 and was conducted by Dr. Willis B. Merriam of Pullman, assisted by Dr. Andrist's daughter, Mary and the Chewelah Masonic Lodge with the assistance of his son, Alan.
