Gottleib was a member of the crew of the Battleship Potemkin during the mutiny of 1905. The mutineers abandoned the ship in Romania , Gottleib and Margaretha made their ways to Bremen, Germany and arranged for passage to America on the steamer SS Brandenberg arriving in January 1906. Once in America, they made their way to Herried, South Dakota where they settled and raised their family.
