|Birth: ||May 10, 1828|
Vest-Agder fylke, Norway
|Death: ||Nov. 14, 1911|
She was married to Hans Nielsen Helland on April 3, 1849, in Hidra, Vest-Agder, Norway. Hans died at sea. Enger and both her first husband, Hans Nielsen, and her second husband, Sjur Aarentsen, lived for a time in Kopervik, Norway. Both were coopers (barrel makers). In the eighteen and first half of the nineteen hundreds there was lots of herring and rich fishing on the western coast of Norway. Workers went to places like Kopervik in winter and spring. They worked receiving all the herring when the boats came in. Barrels were needed to contain the herring. Sjur must have come from Kyrping to Kopervik on seasonal work and met Kathrina (Catrine) there.
She & Sjur were married on June 1 (or 3rd), 1852. They were married in Avaldsnes, Rogaland, Norway and came to America in 1852 with 3 children, 2 from her first marriage (Mary & Sena) and their son Aaron (or Arents Sjursen).
Baptismal records in Norway shows her name as: Inger Cathrine
From: Lisbon column, Morris Daily Herald 21 Nov 1911, page 4 column 4:
Mrs. Severt Anderson passed gently away Tuesday, November 14, 1911 in her home at Lisbon, at the age of 83 years, 6 months, 4 days. February 13, 1910 she was taken with a paralytic stroke on the left side and made her helpless. She had to be handled like a child. She lingered in this condition for one year and a little over. On Sunday, November 12, she was taken with another stroke and her speech was almost gone, as her tongue was partly paralyzed. Monday her speech was somewhat better and she could be understood. She knew death was near to relieve her of all pain. She bid them all good bye and talked with them until death called her to her reward.
Mrs. Inger Cathrine Osmondatter was born in Lovig, Ness Sogn, Norway, May 10th 1828. She was married to Severt Anderson in 1843. Came to America in 1854, on a sailing vessel and they were on the ocean eleven weeks. When they came to Quebec there was so much cholera on board the vessel that they were quarantined, so they bought another ticket and took another route from Buffalo and came to Chicago by vessel.
They settled at Newark, Ill, and as the people were afraid of them on account of the cholera they were allowed to stay in a barn. Then they were promoted to a bedroom in one house and had to climb in and out of the window. Then they moved to a log house on Mr. Booth's farm and he worked at the cooper trade. They lived 3 years there, when he bought a lot of John Moore and built a house, and in 1857 moved to Lisbon. They lived there together and raised a large family. Mr. Anderson died in 1902 and she lived with her children until her death.
They were blessed with 15 children, 6 have died, 9 are living. Mrs. Terris Larson, of Nettle Creek; Mrs. Knute Seglin, of Eldorado, Kansas; Mrs. William Larson, of Humbolt, Iowa; Mrs. A. L. Nelson, of Newark, Ill; Mrs. Sam Paulson at home; also Martin Anderson of Elliott, Ill; and Peter, John, and Ed Anderson at home.
The funeral was held Saturday at 11 o'clock from the house and at the West church. Rev. Shefveland officiated. The remains were laid to rest beside her husband, and the others who have gone before in the west cemetery.
