She was previously married to John Curtright Candler, with whom she had two daughters, Adelaide Martin Candler and Florrie George Candler. She and John were divorced around 1927 and she married Dr. James Harrington Boyd in 1936.

She was an accomplished musician, having received a certificate in violin and piano from Peabody Institute in Baltimore and was described by the Atlanta Constitution as a "finished artist of unusual ability."

Her former husband, John C. Candler, the son of a well-respected methodist bishop and former chancellor of Emory University (Bishop Warren A. Candler) and the nephew of the Coca Cola tycoon (Asa Griggs Candler, Sr.) caused quite a stir when he filed for divorce in Georgia, claiming that Henrietta was "a believer in 'what is commonly known as free love' and ... 'possesses an uncontrollable temper'" and that she "persisted in carrying on flirtations with other men..." However, although he demanded custody of their two minor daughters, Adelaide (my grand mother) and Florrie remained in Baltimore.

Daughter of Ormond Willson Hammond and Adelaide Satchell Martin
