Raised in Kansas and Colorado, Carl joined the army in 1955. While stationed in Amarillo, he met and married Neiva Yuvonne Helton in 1959. His service in the Army also took them to Junction City, KS, and El Paso, TX. He later fought in Vietnam, where he earned the Purple Heart. He was stationed in Germany between 1970 to 1976. After leaving the Army, he lived in Amarillo between 1976 and 1990, then around Dallas, TX, between 1990 and 1997. He lived the last two years of his life back in Amarillo.
Wife: Yuvonne Barnes of Amarillo. Children: Neiva Mae (Tem) Chambless, Carl Lee (Alicia) Barnes, Ellis Dean Barnes, Lisa Gesulga, Kevin (Delana) Barnes (all of Amarillo) and Jennifer (Dean) Edwards of Nottingham, England. Brothers: Benjamin Floyd Barnes of Nebraska, and Danny Barnes of Wyoming. Sister: Rosie Stetson Clarkson of Colorado.
11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded by both parents, sisters Dortha Hyde and Fern Coots, brother Richard Lee Barnes, Sr., and stepmother Delourse Barnes. Funeral services were held at Friendship Baptist Church, Amarillo, Rev. Ronnie Tucker officiating.
