William Martin Allen died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Oklahoma City after a brief illness. Born January 28, 1920 to Elizabeth (Martin) and Joe Bailey Allen, William was the oldest of three sons. He was married to Mary Ellen Gossage on December 29,1946 in Kansas City. William served with honor in the Army during World War II, from North Africa to Italy, France, and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. After the war, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma, and went on to earn his law degree at Oklahoma University in 1948. William began his law practice with the firm of Gomer Smith and Associates. For a time he served as head of the legal department of Allied Materials Corporation, where he was active in labor relations. Through most of the 1960s he was owner and president of Superior Contractors, Inc. In 1969, he returned to law practice with attorney Leo Thompson, and then joined the firm of Smith, Smith, and Cook. William was appointed Special District Judge in Oklahoma County in January 1974, a position he held for 10 years. He and Mary Ellen greatly enjoyed their years of retirement together.
William was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Charles Irwin Allen. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; his brother, Joe Bailey Allen and sister-in-law Ann Flesher of Longview, Texas; his son, Robert Stephen and daughter-in-law Amanda of Austin, Texas; his son, David William and daughter-in-law Brooke of Carrollton, Texas, and son, John Barry of Oklahoma City. His grandchildren include Jason Todd, Brian William, and Emily Elizabeth (Austin); and Whitney Paige and Taylor Martin (Carrollton). Family members will greet friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday evening at Guardian West Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Guardian West, with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery.
