The Canton Repository. Canton, Ohio. December 25, 1898..
Family of Five generations: Such an One is at Present in Canton: Betz People First.
It is a rare thing that any person lives to see the family, of which he is a member, extend into the fifth generation. Such a privilege, however, has been accorded Mrs. Elizabeth Betz, an old and respected citizen of this city, who resides at the northeast corner of Tuscarawas and Cherry streets.
Mrs. Betz came to this city in company with her husband, Leonard Betz, in 1850, and since that time has lived in the same house which she now occupies. It is a low, two story brick building with a two story frame annex in the rear, and sheltered many a pilgrim to the wild and woolly west, in the earlier days. The place was owned by one Hensel, who kept a tavern there when the Betz family came to town. It was frequented by travelers who were going across the country by wagon, and in those times, half a century ago, their white covered wagons with pails and bundles of straw hanging beneath, together with tired horses of all descriptions were seen hitched in front.
Leonard Betz engaged himself in the produce business, and by means of his honest and extensive dealings, became well known throughout this section of the state. He had a large stock of goods in the corner part of the Cassilly block at the corner of Market and East Tuscarawas street. He transacted his business in the basement of that block.
The picture (that followed the end of the article) was taken at a home gathering in the early fall of the present year, and represents the five generations of the family. The first at the right is Mrs. Betz. The next is Mrs. Daniel Maser, of No. 337 West Fifth street, her daughter. At her right is Mrs. Alice Lichtenwalter of West Fourth street, Mrs. Maser's daughter, and by her side is Howard Lichtenwalter of Water avenue, Mrs. Lichtenwalter's son. Next to him is his only son, Robert Grant Lichtenwalter, aged eight months. All five people represent an aggregate age of 232 years, and all are enjoying the best of health. Mrs. Betz, who is nearly ninety years old, retains her faculties and enjoys extremely good health for one so aged. She has a remarkably good memory, retaining the history of many events which occurred in the days when Canton was but a small village, and which had much to do in weaving the future of what is now a city. She is a member of and a faithful attendant at the German Evangelical church in East Fourth street, and has been a follower in the denomination for over half a century having declared herself a Christian when she was living in Shaferstown, Pennsylvania, from which place she came to make her home in Canton.
The family tree is extensive. There were seven children born to her, four of whom are now dead; 18 grandchildren, seven of whom are dead; sixteen great grandchildren, all of whom are living; and on great-great grandchild, a bouncing boy whose likeness is shown in the picture. [Note: the article or family failed to mention her second great-great grandchild Catherine Elizabeth Schrock who had bee born on January 14, 1898].
Many friends have admired the photograph, and have congratulated Mrs. Betz upon reaching such a ripe old age in such excellent health and midst such splendid environments. They have expressed their wishes for an extended continuance of her happy life.
