DEATH CLAIMS VERNE BRANIGIN
Death early this morning claimed Verne Branigin, 68, well known Mount Vernon attorney who was instrumental in the founding of the YMCA in Mount Vernon. Mr. Branigin was also serving as a trustee of Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham at the time of his passing, a position which he had held for the last 16 years.
A resident of Mount Vernon for 41 years, he was born Feb. 15, 1881, in Franklin, IN. On Dec. 8, 1908, his marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Stella Atwood, took place in Franklin. The couple had grown up together and were members of the same high school graduating class. They also both attended Franklin College, Mr. Branigin then entering the Harvard school of law.
Mr. Branigin came West to Mount Vernon in July, 1908, returning to Franklin to claim his bride. The couple had made their home here ever since that time, Mr. Branigin joining the late Henry McLean in a law partnership. When Mr. McLean moved to Seattle a short time later, the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Branigin continued alone in the law practice.
As executor of the estate of the late Thomas Barrett, Mr. Branigin directed the use of funds willed for the purpose of constructing the YMCA building here, and served as first chairman of the board of directors. Other trustees were P. J. Pedersen, the late R. L. Davis, G. W. Fowler and John F. Martin. The building was dedicated in March, 1942.
Tribute to Mr. Branigin was paid at the recent annual meeting of the YMCA, at which time Mrs. Branigin represented her husband, who had been ill since November.
Mr. Branigin was a long time member of the United Presbyterian church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge; Nile Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine; Skagit County Shrine Club, and Blue Lodge Scottish Rites of Bellingham and was one of the organizers of the Fort-nightly club of this city.
Surviving are his wife, Stella; one son, William A. Branigin of Seattle; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Baldwin who is here from Quincy, Calif.; one brother, Elba L. Branigin, Franklin (IN) attorney; one sister, Mrs. Daisy Van Nuys of Franklin and five grandchildren.
Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Saturday from the Coy R. Kern funeral home, with Drs. W. Dwight Gillespie and A. W. Wilson of the United Presbyterian church officiating. The remains will be sent to Franklin, IN, for interment, accompanied by Mrs. Branigin and their daughter, Helen.
