Early Life: He was born to Lois Rae and Edwin Abbott in Butte on July 3, 1932. He grew up and attended local schools in Butte. After high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force and served for four years as an air military policeman. During this time, he attended Oberammergau Military Intelligence School and spent the last years of his service in England.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Meikle, on June 12, 1954. Together they raised three children: Lee, Shawn and Tom. After serving his country he attended the University of Montana in Missoula and received his Bachelor's Degree in Forestry in 1961. In the next chapter of his life, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a forester. This career took him and his family to Kellogg, Idaho; Missoula, Sula and Kalispell, Montana. He retired from the Forest Service in 1982 after 26 years. He had a second career in real estate in Kalispell. He retired from real estate in 1999 and started his favorite season of his life, restoring World War II Jeeps. He enjoyed sharing his passion by driving military personnel in local parades. In the last chapter of his life, he enjoyed volunteering at the Central School Museum. He spent six years in restoration and researching the steam engine for the Oakes ship. He was given an honorary lifetime membership for his dedicated work. He loved hunting, camping, fishing, hiking and Montana history. Ray was very family oriented and was a role model. He made lifelong friends. Raymond W. Abbott passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012, after a drowning accident.
