Caroline, also known as Carrie, was the daughter of Amandus Hufford and Anna Maria Raub.(Amandus was born Jul 1815 [alternate yr: 1822], PA; died Dec. 21, 1905. Anna Maria was born April 23, 1821, PA.) Caroline and family were recorded in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania on the 1850 and 1860 Census records, in Northampton (Pg 353-A; Family 5), and then Allentown, (Pg 1020; Family 567).

In the early 1860s, at about age 16, Carrie married a Mr. Daning (alternate spellings: "Demming" or "Denning"). How the marriage ended is not known, but she and her parents moved about this time period to Ohio as her youngest son from this marriage was born there as noted on several census records. As for her parents and siblings, according to the 1895 Missouri State Census, Amandus enlisted during the Civil War in Ohio and served in Company F, Regiment 71.

After the war, Amandus and family relocated to Jackson County, Missouri, settling in Kaw Township, where Caroline was listed among her siblings, all younger, on the 1870 Census (Pg 14-A; Family 186): Anna, Alice, Henry, Farris ("Phares"), Rosanna, Emma, Oscar, and Lizzie. Mixed among Amandus and Anna's children, and under the Hufford surname, were Carrie's sons: Monroe, age 7 and born in Pennsylvania, and Eugene, age 3 and born in Ohio.

On May 18, 1879, in Jackson County, Missouri, as Mrs. Carrie A. Daning, she married (George) Henry Cathey. The couple appeared on the 1880 Census (ED 22; Pg 7-A) in Kaw Township with Henry's son George (age 6) and Carrie's two sons, listed as Munroe and Eugene Denning, ages 16 and 13 respectively. {Note: Transcriptions ascribe the surname "Calby"; however, close inspection of the document indicates "Cathy" with the "t" left uncrossed and no "e."}

In 1885, she and Henry, along with Eugene (age 17) and George (age 11), were living in Shawnee, Johnson County, Kansas (State Census, Line 7; Family 3). Monroe apparently had moved out on his own. Carrie and Henry as well as George were to remain in Shawnee until their deaths.

According to an international marriage database, James M (probably Monroe) Denning, born about 1865 in Pennsylvania, married in 1888 a Miss Gertrude White, born about 1873 in Missouri. Census records on this family indicate that Monroe lived in Henry County, Indiana, for a number of years before moving to Ashtabula County, Ohio, by 1920. He apparently died in Ohio in 1934, only 16 years after his mother.

Meanwhile, George moved out on his own prior to his marriage (in Shawnee) in 1897 to Ida Gertrude Bousman. Eugene's whereabouts have not been ascertained, but he died sometime before 1910. On the 1895 state census (Line 11; Family 150), Henry and Carrie, ages 46 and 51, were living by themselves; although one household away were Carrie's parents. Her parents were still close by on the 1900 Census (ED 105; Pg 8-B) as were Henry's son and daughter-in-law George W and Ida G Cathey, recorded on the following census page.

By the 1905 Census (Line 25; Family 1), Carrie's father, listed as "Meyer Hufferd," was living with Carrie and her husband. He died later that year. Again close by were George and his wife Ida as well as her parents, the George Bousmans. In 1910 (ED 113; Pg 24-A), Henry, at age 60, was the sexton at a cemetery. Carrie was reported as having birthed two children with only one still living, by all indications the child who died was Eugene.

Living next door to the Catheys on the 1910 federal census and then on the 1915 state census (Line 11; Family 4) were Carrie's brother, Ferris Hufford (b. abt 1856, PA), and his wife Anna. Although Henry was 65 (and Carrie was 70), Henry was again working as a laborer. This was the last census on which either spouse would appear. Carrie died at age 72, and Henry followed just two years later when he was age 70.
