CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Edna Ilene Akers, 81, of Carthage, died at 8:11 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 27, 2012) at her home.

Edna was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Sonora Township in Hancock County, the daughter of William and Mildred Markey Howd. She graduated from Carthage High School. On Aug. 5, 1950, she married James Akers in Palmyra, Mo., and they were married more than 61 years. He died on Aug. 10, 2011.

Edna was a school bus driver for the Carthage School system for 38 years and cared for all the children on her bus.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage for many years. She enjoyed her farm life, especially the many years raising sheep. She was especially devoted to her family which was always first and foremost.

Edna is survived by three children, Sue Zinn of Warsaw, Jim E. (Luan) Akers of Carthage and Mike Akers of Carthage; five grandchildren, Travis (Becky) Akers of Rockford, Willie (Monica) Akers of Carthage, Wesley (Morgan) Akers of Carthage, Louie (Anne) Zinn of Warsaw and Jami (Seth) Minter of Macomb; three great-grandchildren, Chase and Kaylee Akers of Rockford and Jailyn Akers of Carthage; a stepgranddaughter, Melissa Webb of Carthage; one sister, Lucille "Dude" Belshaw of Carthage; a brother, Eugene Howd of Carthage; and many nieces and nephews.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; two sisters, Marie David and Millie Redd; one brother, Will Howd; a daughter-in-law, Karen Akers; a son-in-law, Philip Zinn; and a stepgrandson, Robert Webb.

SERVICES: 2:30 p.m. Sunday graveside services will be held in Moss Ridge Cemetery at Carthage.

MEMORIALS: Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

ARRANGEMENTS: Printy Funeral Home, Carthage.
