Bill enlisted in the United States Army on 17 November 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. During World War II, he participated in five Unit Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. Bill was an M-10 Tank Destroyer Driver.
After the war, he continued on as an Armor Instructor at Fort Benning, Georgia. While there, he actually drove a tank in the movie "The Tanks are Coming" before moving with the school to Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Bill was the youngest child of John McLin Blair and Roberta White. His four older brothers also served during World War II. Robert Love, Albert Shirley, Paul G. "Pete" in the United States Army and John Dallas in the United States Navy. Bill married Mary Alene Sadler and they had one daughter.
