Stanley F. Harmacinski
Jan. 28, 1917 - Oct. 27, 2012

South Bend Tribune, October 28, 2012

SOUTH BEND - Stanley F. Harmacinski, 95, was born in South Bend on January 28, 1917. Stanley was the last surviving sibling of ten brothers and sisters. His working career began as a South Bend Tribune newspaper boy and he vividly recalled selling "Extras" when Charles Lindbergh was always in the news. At Bendix Field (now the Michiana Regional Airport), Stanley would watch history in action and noted famous people flying through, such as Earhart, Doolittle, and Roscoe Turner, who was known for flying with a pet lion. An accomplished dancer, Stanley would drive to Chicago on occasion when Big Band Leader Glenn Miller would play. Later, a job at Oliver was interrupted by WW II when Stanley enlisted in the Army in June 1942 and served over 3 years in the Asiatic Pacific in the 57th Engineer Battalion Company B throughout three campaigns: Guadacanal, Northern Solomons and Philippine Islands. His continuous and distinguished service was recognized with various decorations and citations: Awarded Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. After WW II, Stanley worked a farm in Lakeville and became an employee of Bendix Corporation Aircraft Division and settled in Mishawaka, retiring after 30 years of service. He was known for tinkering on various antique cars and motorcycles, as well as raising award-winning roses, and was an avid bowler who competed across the Midwest through the Eagles VFW Club. Stanley was married to Lillian Parafin on June 25, 1955. She preceded him in death in 2003, and he is survived by his two children: daughter, Connie, living in the Michiana area, and son, Larry, who resides with his wife in North Carolina.

As per Stanley's wishes, cremation is to take place and a private graveside service is to be held at a later date.
