John and his militia group were captured by Confederate troops at Centerville, Virginia on 12 Sept. 1863, which incuded his son Granville.
John was the son of John M. Armstrong (1791-1871) and Mary Wilson Armstrong (1790-1860).
Married: Sarah Talbott 14 Dec. 1843. Sarah was born 1826, died 1885. They were parents of 10 children. Their oldest, Granville B. Armstrong, was also in the civil war, a prisoner of war at Andersonville, and died there 15 June, 1864, shortly before John and a double tragedy for this family. Granville is buried in grave #1968, this cemetery.
