Birth: Aug., 1839
Steuben County
New York, USA
Death: 1902
Chesaning
Saginaw County
Michigan, USA

Martin Van Buren Dye was born in Steuben County, NY in August of 1839 and enlisted as a private in the 14th New York Heavy Artillery, 1/5/1864, and was mustered out 6/2/1865. The 14th saw action at several engagements in northern Virginia including the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg. The regiment also participated in the Grand Reiew of the Armies of the Union in Washington D. C.

Martin was married three times. His second wife was Phoebe Coleman, whom he married about 1886 in Chesaning, MI. Phoebe was a Canadian born in Wentworth County, ONT CAN. Martin and Phoebe likely met while she was visiting her aunt who lived in Chesaning. It appears this marriage did not last long because Canadian census records list Phoebe, with their son Asa, in Canada in 1891, while Martin remained in Chesaning. Martin married for the third time about 1898. He died in 1902 in Chesaning and was buried there, with his first wife, in Wildwood Cemetery. Phoebe died, 4/8/1930 in Lynden, ONT CAN. [Note: Their son Asa was killed in France while serving during World War I with the Canadian Galt 25th Brant Dragoons.]
