Carl Bernard Ankenbruck (1895-1963), was the only son of John Bernard Ankenbruck (1866-1950) and Margaret Mausbaum Ankenbruck. Carl had two sisters; Clara Ankenbruck (1893-1972) and Helen Ankenbruck Fiedler (1900-1946). Carl was a carpenter, who began his career in his father's contracting business. Carl's grandfather Bernard Ankenbruck, who came to the United States from Germany at age 5 was a truck farmer who lived on nine acres in the area which is now McMillen Park.

Carl Ankenbruck married Cecelia Julia App on June 23, 1920. Cecelia (1898-1997), was the daughter of Martin App (1863-1951) and Elizabeth Kramer App (1864-1945). Carl and cecelia had six children: Mary born 1921 married Paul Trey, Thomas J. 1923-2005 married Katherine Allgeier, Rita 1925-2009 married Ernie Miller, Catherine born 1928 married Gene Foley, Charles 1930-2005 married Beatrice Heck, and Elizabeth born 1935 married Richard Meyer. Carl and Cecelia had 28 grandchildren.

The App family traces its roots to Germany. Martin App's father, Mathias App (1830-1912), was a bootmaker who came to the United States in 1852 from Ertingen, Riedling, Germany. Mathias App married Rosina Wagner in 1858 and later arrived in Fort Wayne and established App's Shoe Store in 1867. The store was located at 916 South Calhoun Street, and it flourished there until 1940. Great grandson, Thomas Ankenbruck made shoe deliveries for the store on his bicycle as a teenager. Mathias's daughter Ann App (1872-1959) lived her entire life in the family home. This property is part of the current site of the downtown Allen County Public Library building.

Cecelia's parents, Martin and Elizabeth App, had four other daughters: Rose (1890-1990) a homemaker; Marie (1892-1990) an accountant for App's Shoe Store; Agnes (1895-1987), who worked in the office of Wayme Knitting Mill; and Hilda (1900-1994) who married Hugh Hart and taught music in several Fort Wayne area schools.
