Sarah's Birth Record of Putnam Co, Virginia (now WV) lists her as Sarah J "Wilkerson," born 15 Sep 1860, on the Left Fork of Pocatalico, Virginia. Her parents were listed as William T & Martha A Wilkerson, residents of Putnam Co. Note alternate spelling of Wilkinson. Sarah's WV Death Certificate INCORRECTLY lists her date of birth as 6 Nov 1861.

Since West Virginia was not a state when Sarah was born, she was actually born in Putnam County, Virginia (now WV).

She married William "Bill" M Beckner on 28 Jul 1881, in Kanawha County, West Virginia. From 1926-1931, she was among the first midwifes to be licensed by the WV Health Dept. She must have functioned as a midwife before licensing was required & then later without licensing. She was a lifetime resident of Kanawha County, WV.

In the 1900 census, Sarah was listed as having 11 children and seven living. The seven living children were Volley Franklin, John Campbell, Matthew, Elben A, James Washington, Bessie E & Laura B. After the 1900 census Elben died, and she had a 12th child that died young.

In the 1910 census, Sarah was listed as having 12 children and six living. These six living children all lived to adulthood: Volley, John, Matthew, James, Bessie, & Laura.
