Kathelene Galloway, 45, of La Grande, died Dec. 19 at her home. A service in her honor will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Kathelene was born June 11, 1964, to Rulon Kidd Galloway and Engelina Ingrid (Krüger) Galloway in Pocatello, Idaho. Kathelene loved the West and spent years as a young child in Utah where she discovered her passion for art. Her passion took her to Boise where she received her bachelor of fine arts with honors and later went on to receive her master of fine arts degree in drawing from the University of Indiana.

Kathelene moved back to the West to be near her mother and begin her teaching career at Eastern Oregon University. While at EOU Kathelene taught printmaking and drawing in the art department.

Those who knew her say Kathelene was an inspired teacher who brought out the best in all of her students, many of whom came to her feeling like the task ahead was impossible. Through her encouraging teaching style, her students were able to find within them a way to overcome the impossible to not only create art but to also deeply appreciate art.

She is survived by her companion, Jo Topholm; sister, Mary Ellen Haley of San Jose, Calif.; brother, Rulon K. Galloway Jr. of Provo Utah; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be sent to the Kat Galloway Memorial Fund, which will support talented beginning artists attending Eastern Oregon University.

To contribute, send funds to the EOU Foundation and note "Kat" on the gift. It can be in the form of a check or cash with a note indicating the name and amount.
