Charles Darwin Austin, 60

Celebration of Life services for Charles Darwin Austin, 60, of Omaha, Nebraska were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28 in Omaha, Nebraska. Interment was at Prospect Hill. Mr. Austin died December 24, 1998 at his home of cancer.

Charles Darwin Austin was born November 8, 1938 in Iowa City. He grew up in Crystal Lake with his parents, Everett and Lois Austin, and an older brother, Marvin. After graduating from high school, he attended Gale Institute for railroad telegrapher school in 1957, He began his railroad career working as a telegrapher and depot agent. Later he worked as a wire chief in Chicago and DCS Moines. He moved his way up to being a train dispatcher for the Rock Island Railroad in DCS Moines. Charles joined the Union Pacific Railroad in 1980 as a train dispatcher in Pocutello, Idaho. He was transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah and later was transferred to Omaha, Nebraska where he worked from 1989 to 1997.
During his working career, he also worked at the Board of Trade while in Chicago, and while in DCS Moines he worked part time as a gas attendant and police officer. He
worked a second full time job at Armstrong Tires while in DCS Moines.

He was married in 1957 to his wife, Verlynn. They are parents of twin daughters, Becky Jo and Vicky Lynn; and two sons, Marde Charles and James Everett.

He had many hobbies. He was a skilled saxophonist, played the piano, and was a vocalist. In his younger years, he pitched baseball. He loved billiards, fishing and golf.

Charles is survived by his wife, Verlynn; his sons, Marde and his wife, Tina, of Altoona, and James and his wife, Janet, of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Becky Hillman of Omaha, and Vicky Shaver and her husband, Tom, of Elkhorn, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and a brother, Marvin Austin and his wife, Alice, of Lakota.
