The passing of a Pioneer
Moses Martz, the venerable pioneer of Arcadia, died Monday morning, after a short illness of pneumonia, aged 87.
Moses Martz was born in Piqua, O, may 27, 1812 (not say what state? note from Cindy) and at the age of four years came with his father's family to Wayne county, Indiana where he grew to manhood and where in 1835 he married Tabitha McCormick, After he worked on his farm's farm for three years after which he came t Hamilton county and settled where Arcadia now stands. At that time, this part of the country was almost unbroken wilderness, and the twin Martz brothers with their twin wives, experienced all the hardship attendant upon pioneer life and did their full share toward the reclaation of the land. They cleared the virgin forests, tilled the soil, built houses and sawmills, and made roads. They provided happy homes for themselves and their numberous descendants and during their long lives they saw the "wilderness" bud and blossom as the rose." Foremost in all good works, they gave freely of their time, labor and means to all enterprises of the improvement and advancement of their chosen home.
and now, after a long and useful life thus spent, Moses Martz, the third of the famous quarteete, has gone to his reward. His aged life partner remains, and to her and his numberous children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, his memory will be a benison and an inspiration.
The funeral was held Wednesday at ten o'clock in the Christian Church, Rev. T.A. Cooper officiating, A vast concourse of relatives and friends testifed their respect for the good man gone, and followed his remains to their last resting place in the CrownHill Cemetery.
