Evelyn Rachel Applegate and Elsie "Theresa" Applegate (Miller) made their home in the Swan Lake Valley, on the Brookside Ranch, for over forty years.

Much of their schooling was in Pasadena, California where their parents spent their winters. Later they attended college in California.

Talented musicians, in their early years they played in a trio with their sister Bessie, who died in the influenza epidemic in 1918. Evelyn was a piantist, Elsie played the violin. Together with their sister Bessie, they were the youngest members of a very creative and talented family.

Evelyn who became a teacher, was educated in several colleges before receiving her Masters Degree from Columbia University, always returning to "Brookside" for her vacations.

During the summer of 1924 her mother died and she resigned her position as Music Supervisor in Anaheim, California schools to stay home with her father, who was in failing health. Lucien, her father died in 1926 and thereafter the ranch was home. All the buildings were destroyed by fire and the ranch was sold.

Evleyn accepted a position with the Klamath Falls Schools as director of music. She retired from the music department of the San Francisco Schools in 1940.

Evelyn built a summer cabin on the bank of William Creek, which bordered their property. She retired and the sisters began living in the 'cabin' which they
remodeled into a comfortable home. The sisters were still taking pack trips into the wilderness areas surrounding their home when they were in their seventies.

Evelyn died at eight-nine years of age.
