Esther Emily Ogden was born in a mining camp near Nevada City, California. Her father was Robert Shannon Ogle of Virginia and her mother was Christina Kistle Ogden of England.

Esther married the love of her life, Elmer Applegate, on July 5, 1899 in Nevada, California.

After marrying, she was in charge of nature studies and geography in the San Bernardino Schools for a period of time.

Esther and Elmer made their home in Klamath Falls but they traveled the up and down the Pacific Coast and Rocky Mountains. Esther was a talented artist who worked in watercolors, pastels and oils. Esther painted botanical specimens while Elmer botanized.

Her drawings can be seen via the Shaw Historical Library.

Esther had a tendency towards illness, sometimes limiting their travels, but they still remained constant companions. It appears that they remained immensely in love and truly enjoyed life...
