Helen Kathryn Allan, age 92 of Mt. Sterling, died Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove.

She was born November 9, 1918 in Mt. Hope, Grant County, Wis. to Bernhardt and Martha (Hardy) Ronnfeldt. Her mother died when she was three years old and Helen and her sister and brother were then raised by their father and an aunt and uncle. She graduated from Seneca High School in 1936 and was united in marriage to Clarence T. Allan on November 20, 1937. They farmed in Crawford County until Clarence's death in 1968. Helen worked as a CNA at Boscobel Nursing Home and then Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua until her retirement in 1988. She was a long time member of Utica Lutheran Church and participated in many church functions. She was a member of the Rachel Circle, Seneca Cactus Club, and Seneca and Mt. Sterling Senior Citizen Groups. Helen made many lovely quilts over the years and spent many hours crocheting and knitting. She was an excellent cook and baker, especially her lefsa and cinnamon rolls. She enjoyed her volunteer work at Sugar Creek Bible Camp and the company of her many friends in attending various local and church functions. Helen loved to attend her grandchildren's school activities and sports events.

She is survived by her children: Robert (Joan) Allan of Seneca, Marlene Knutson of Viroqua, Ruth Ann (Bob) Messling of Mt. Sterling and Roger (Mindy) Allan of Janesville; grandchildren: Robert (Millie) Allan of Gays Mills, Susan (Tim) Olson of Sun Prairie, Barbara (Ken) Martin of Eastman, Gary (SueAnn) Allan of Seneca, Laurie (Doug) Linder of Prosper, Texas, Scott Allan of Seneca, Brenda (Kevin) Hansen of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sherri (Rob) Krause of Viroqua, Steven (Olga) Messling of Muscoda, David (Penny) Messling of Janesville, Greg (Jill) Messling of Holmen, Karen Messling of Prairie du Chien, Mark (Mandy) Allan of Oregon, Wisconsin., Andrea (Justin) Nickel of Janesville, Kristin (Fiance Tyson Krcma) Allan of McFarland; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice McDaniel of Tewksbury, Mass. and her children, Sandra, John and Kathy; son-in-law, Merlin Knutson of Viroqua; nieces; nephews; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence in 1968; brother, Ben Ronnfeldt; two great-grandchildren: Julie Olson and Justice Allan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Utica Lutheran Church, rural Ferryville. Pastor Anna Sorenson will officiate with burial in the Utica Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker Street, (Hwy. 56) in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
