Royal was the son of Ida Della Tremain & Charles (Charlie) Wadkins/Watkins. His parents were farmers. The family moved from Shelby Co., Iowa to Minnesota shortly before Royal's birth, where his father took a job as a railroad fireman. Royal was born in St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. From there they moved to Hennepin Co., Minneapolis, Mn.
His father died in 1907 in a workhouse. After that, Royal lived with his mother. He had 5 brothers. After his mother died in 1911, his younger brothers were sent to the Washburn Memorial Orphan Asylum. They eventually ran away from there, and Royal and his wife took in two of the young men for a time. Royal and Myrtle G Olson were married on July 23, 1918 in Hennepin County, Mn. They continued living in the Minneapolis area.
Royal was medium height, medium build, and was very athletic. He once swam across the Mississippi River 8 times in a row on a dare, just to prove that he could.
From his draft card I found that he had dark hair and blue eyes. He was a teamster, an ice wagon driver. Sometime after 1940 he and Myrtle split up.
