Long-time Manitou Springs resident Ruth Armstrong passed away on March 31st 2009 at Village at Skyline in Colorado Springs, Colorado at age 87. Mrs. Armstrong was born in Quincy Illinois on March 10, 1922 as Ruth Darnell, She died of lung cancer. Ruth will be remembered as a passionate participant in community affairs in Manitou Springs. After retiring as a music teacher from District 11, Ruth remained an active community member, serving on the Manitou Springs City Council. She was proudest of her efforts to prohibit gambling in the City of Manitou Springs. Even after serving on the Council, Ruth maintained an ongoing interest in local affairs. Ruth received her BA in Business from the University of Illinois. She received her Masters Degree at Denver University in Music Education. She married H. Dean Moon in Illinois after college, and began her family and teaching career in Illinois. She and her family moved to Colorado Springs in 1955, at which time she began teaching music at District 11. She was an active musician outside of school as well. For many years she sang in the choir at the Episcopalian Church in downtown Colorado Springs. She also performed in the Colorado Springs Civic Opera for many years. In addition she participated in many madrigal and Christmas shows. Ruth moved to Manitou Springs in 1967 when she married Richard Armstrong, now deceased. She belonged to the Manitou Springs Women's Club and was a member of the Colorado Springs Country Club. She and her husband Charlie Andrews also were active members of the North 17th St. Bridge Center. She is survived by Charles Andrews and her children, William Moon in Studio City, California, Pamela Moon in Colorado Springs, and Charles and Sharon Armstrong, both of Manitou Springs. Ruth will be missed for her devotion to education, music and integrity in government. She always took the time to stay informed on local affairs and make her voice known as a voice for sanity. She is loved and she will be missed.
