North Dakota, USA
Death: Apr. 15, 2009
Colorado Springs

Colorado, USA

Ron was born in Fargo, ND on 29 December 1952. He was blessed with a loving and stable family life and often remembered his happy childhood. He was a disciplined student and a natural athlete, playing football, golf, basketball, and track. He was a star quarterback in high school, but a badly timed broken leg ended his football ambitions, and ultimately, focused him on his desire to be an architect and pointed him toward Arizona State University.

At ASU, Ron dove enthusiastically into architecture, and his hard work and design talent were recognized by his classmates and professors. He met Pamela Hancock at their apartment complex, falling deeply and deliberately in love. He graduated second in his class on 15 May 1976 and married the love of his life the next day.

Over the next few years, Ron became a father to his two boys, Aaron and Troy. In the early 1980's, he decided to move his family to Colorado Springs, choosing a home in the foothills near the Garden of the Gods. He was an attentive, loving, and skillful father. He was a gentle teacher and advisor as his boys grew up in Pleasant Valley and eventually on the south side of town, where he designed the home that they would occupy for many years.

In 2003, he and Pam moved to the Larkspur area, where they could spend ample time together golfing and fulfilling their desire to live close to the forest, a dream that they had nurtured during their courtship in Flagstaff and the Black Hills. Aaron and his wife Heather made Ron a grandpa in 2003 and again in 2005 with the births of Pete and Nora. He loved children and treasured time with his grandkids.

After ten years as an employee at Higginbotham and Associates and another ten years as a partner to Don Higginbotham, Ron took over as the sole owner of the firm, now named HB&A, in 2001. Under his leadership, the firm won many national awards and built a reputation for quality work. He was a generous boss and a sharp businessman. He felt acutely responsible for the families that he employed, and strove to provide a successful, stable, and enriching workplace.

On 21 February 2008, Ron was struck by a seizure outside the offices of HB&A. In the following days, the family learned that it was caused by an aggressive brain cancer. The tumor was surgically removed in March and Ron received intense treatment, regaining strength throughout 2008. He felt strong in December 2008, when Ron and Pam took their sons, their daughter-in-law, and their grandchildren to Hawaii for a vacation. Ron swam in the ocean, ran on the beach, rediscovered his golf game, and celebrated the New Year with his family.

Despite the treatments, tumors had recurred during 2008, and following the trip to Hawaii, Ron gradually lost strength and alertness during the first few months of 2009. He died on 15 April surrounded by his family.

He was a genuine friend, a brilliant designer, a gentle jokester, a shepherd father, an inspiring boss, and a humble success. His passing is a huge loss.
