Birth: Dec. 31, 1917

Missouri, USA
Death: Dec. 13, 1997
Fairfax

Virginia, USA

Douglas Campbell suffered a heart attack and died Dec. 13, 1997 about two weeks shy of his 80th birthday. He spent the last two years living near family in an independent living complex for seniors. He received a hero's burial 22 Dec 1997 at Arlington National Cemetery, complete with a military honor guard, firing squad, a bugler who played taps - even a bagpiper who played "Amazing Grace," the "Bluebells of Scotland" and several Celtic hymns. His grave is right off Patton Ave. just a stone's throw from the Pentagon. He packed a lot into his 79 years, orphaned as an infant when his mother died in the great influenza epidemic he was raised in a Catholic orphanage in Kansas City with none of the advantages most grow up with. He enlisted in the Army at the outset of WWII and served in a combat unit that fought in the Battle of the Bulge and Hurtgen Forest, earning the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his bravery. The G.I. Bill enabled him to attend college and earn a civil engineering degree. During his long career, he worked on projects ranging from the Titan & Atlas (moon) rockets to the Alaska pipeline and the oil fields of Saudi Arabia. After retiring, he traveled for a number of years, and spent his last years doing genealogical research.
