Lillian Reba Thigpen was born in Florence (Lauderdale Co.), Alabama. She was said to be outgoing, energetic, compassionate and a devoted mother. It is not known how she met her husband, Willard Chester Cox, but she was wed to him on April 20, 1924 at the age of 19 years and had her first child, Willard McNeil Cox, 5 years later at the age of twenty-four. She obeyed the gospel at an early age lived a consecrated Christian life.
She worked at a textile mill in Florence with her sister Ida Mae Thigpen. It is believed that while working at the textile mill she contracted the dreaded disease of the day, tuberculosis. During her years of illness she prayed to be spared to raise her children to be grown. But it was not to be. The last week of her life it is said she sang almost constantly the hymns; "In the Sweet By and By" and "Heaven Means All to Me". She died on January 7, 1935 at the age of 29 years and in the obituary notice letter sent to the Florence newspaper it states, "We can truly quote Proverbs 31: 28; Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also and he prasieth her.
Lillian Reba Thigpen Cox was buried in the Florence Cemetery in a family plot donated by John Avery Thigpen. The location of her burial site was not marked until 2007 when the children of Lillian did in fact rise up and praise their mother with a fitting tombstone marking her final resting place.
