H.T. Adams learned the blacksmith's trade in his native state of New Hampshire, and followed that business for several years. He married Estelle L. Rodgers, daughter of Moses Rodgers, on September 20, 1857, in Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont. They came to Wisconsin in 1860 and located in Hartford where Horace opened a blacksmith's shop. The business lasted for about a year, when he quit it to engage in the stock business. He was a successful stock dealer who established his business in 1862. He handled from $25,000 to $30,000 worth of stock per month.
